An elder needs to have a capability to fulfil three areas of ministry that are biblically defined. An elder may have different capacities for each of these ministries but they need to be competent in all three areas:
1. Leadership – elders need to be able to lead God’s people this includes making decisions, ruling, overseeing, shepherding, stewarding, rebuking and encouraging the flock under their care and being an example to the flock
2. Word – an elder must be able to instruct and soundly teach the doctrines of orthodox Christian faith, where the elder is appropriately gifted and equipped, prophecy and preaching would also be part of the ministry of the word
3. Ministry – elders are responsible for praying for the church. They would also minister through the laying on of hands, anointing with oil for healing, encouraging the faithful to walk firm and encouraging the lazy and lukewarm to follow Christ with passion
